French bank Credit Agricole is the latest institution to be fined for violating US sanctions. Financial regulators say that between 2003 and 2008 the bank processed more than 32 billion dollars in payments for Iran, Sudan, Myanmar and Cuba.
The ruble has experienced its biggest one-day fall for over two years and stocks in major Russian companies also slid, as investors reacted to a new round of US sanctions targeting some of Russia's biggest tycoons.
ZTE had failed to take promised remedial actions after conspiring to illegally ship US goods to Iran. The US reacted to that failure by slapping a seven-year ban on US sales to the Chinese phone maker.
While insisting Iran does not pose a threat to its neighbors, President Hassan Rouhani said his country would build or buy any weapons it needs. He said arms were needed because "we are not living in a normal region."
