Russian warplanes have mounted a new wave of airstrikes in the provinces of Idlib, Hama and Aleppo. The Syrian military said they targeted IS positions. But Syrian opposition activists report that moderate rebel groups and civilians are being hit.
Syria began its descent into civil war in early 2011, when government security forces shot and killed protesters. But if President Bashar al-Assad thought a show of force would end the protests, he was wrong.
Syrian regime forces and moderate rebels have agreed to a ceasefire north of the city of Homs. The "de-escalation" zone created there will be monitored by Russian troops, and is the third of four planned "safe" areas.
US-led coalition aircraft have allegedly bombed a prison in Syria killing dozens of civilians. The director of public affairs for the coalition campaign confirmed that an investigation had been launched.
The Israeli military has targeted "two Hamas posts" in the Gaza Strip after a rocket landed in Israeli territory. At least three people were hospitalized by the airstrikes, including one in critical condition.
