Classical music for everyone?

Nowadays, the likes of Anna Netrebko, Lang Lang and David Garrett are marketed like pop icons. It’s common for stars of the classical world to play to stadiums, but how did classical music become mainstream?

Classical music enjoyed a boom in the early 1980’s. Back then conductor Herbert von Karajan was a celebrated musician and also a media star. The Three Tenors also found widespread fame. A billion people saw them appear at the 1990 World Cup in Rome and the concert CD sold 14 million copies. This entertaining film includes music clips, interviews with artists and producers, agents and event organizers as it shows how has emerged over the decades classical music from being a niche product to becoming something for the masses.
