The leader of Germany's Social Democrats, Sigmar Gabriel, wants Martin Schulz to run for chancellor. But to date, the former European Parliament president has not been very active in German national politics.
The European Parliament is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the EU. It exercises the legislative function of the EU, affecting the lives of the 510 million people living in the 28-member bloc.
Gabriel wrote a letter to EU leaders slamming Turkish President Erdogan's politics and calling for the bloc to scale back its relations with Ankara. His statements underline an icy relationship with no thaw in sight.
The head of the EU executive called lawmakers unserious and ridiculous. Only a few dozen lawmakers showed up to a debate on the Maltese presidency.
