Chrysler, Ford and General Motors have all submitted their proposals to Congress for multi-billion dollar loans. The Detroit Three have asked for a combined total of 34 billion dollars. In return, they say they'll slash costs, reduce debt levels and invest in greener technology. Critics in the US say the financial crisis is not the only reason the big three are in trouble. They say production at Ford, GM and Chrysler is ineffcient and that labour costs are much too high. But the car companies say they need help now, or they'll go under.
