Chinese tourists' love for Germany grows

For the first time Chinese tourists have reached one million overnight stays in Germany over a six-month period. It is unknown, however, whether the trend will carry over to the second half of 2015.

Chinese visitors continue to stream into Germany in record numbers. However, a stock market slump, a slowdown in growth and the devaluation of the Yuan in China could temporary curb the upward trend, according to experts. "Short-term fluctuations in demand in the coming months are possible," Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the German Center for Tourism told DW. "In the medium term, however, we expect continued and stable demand."

Fluctuations may be cushioned by the fact Chinese nationals often travel in organized groups, and tour operator calculate the price at least one year ahead of time, explained Hedorfer. The buying strength of the increasingly strong middle class in China should not fundamentally be affected by the recent economic downturn.

Since 2010, the number of overnight stays from China has more than doubled in Germany. The figures are collated by the Federal Bureau of Statistics from hotels and guesthouses with more than 10 beds.
