China's state-run aircraft-company COMAC has rolled out its latest model, the C-919 jetliner. COMAC has been the new kid on the block in the aviation industry for a while, but can it truly challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus?
The first Chinese-designed jetliner since the 1970s has taken off for its maiden flight in Shanghai, broadcast live on state television. China hopes to rival Boeing and Airbus with its single-aisle C919 aircraft.
During a visit by the Chinese president to its production sites in France, Airbus said it had won a major order from China for 140 planes totaling $22.8 billion. Even for big-ticket airplanes it is a massive booking.
Air travel is bad for the climate - but it doesn't have to be. Climate-friendly flight routes and renewable jet fuel could make flying in planes way more environmentally friendly - this would just need to be implemented.
China is reportedly sending the aircraft carrier Liaoning to Hong Kong to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Chinese sovereignty over the territory. Taiwan sees the naval maneuver as a provocation.
