China for Beginners - A Trip to a Far-off Country

July 8, 2015

China is a country full of contradictions. Two young journalists wanted to know how their peers dealt with them. They spent 14 days travelling around the vast country and brought back a very special report.

Immediately after landing in China, the team took its first tour – to Tiananmen Square in Beijing. That was where, few months before the peaceful uprising in East Germany in 1989, the Chinese government crushed the student protest movement. Amnesty International estimates between several hundred and several thousand people were killed in the crackdown, and the subject is still taboo in today’s China. The twin sons of two professors showed the visitors everyday student life in Beijing. Parental authority in China is still so strong that children unquestioningly defer to their parents’ plans for their professional future.

Blood Tofu and Silkworms
Intercultural tolerance is all well and good, but stomachs are intrinsically conservative. Despite their culinary curiosity, our reporters quickly reached their limits. Blood tofu and silkworms were just too much. Wedding photos in front of St. Michael’s Church in the former German colony of Quingdao have become a real cult. Nobody really marries there, it’s just for photos. The dresses are inspired by Western glossy magazines, and the images are then touched up - right now, round eyes are in.

Not for weak stomachs: the weekly market in Quingdao.

Smog almost as Bad as in Beijing
Rapid economic development in the industrial city of Shenzhen in southern China has massive environmental problems. Their visit to a textile factory gave our reporters an insight into the working day of young seamstresses – albeit a strictly monitored one. Two weeks was really just too short but, during their cross-country marathon, our reporters found out that young Chinese refuse to be discouraged in their fight for personal happiness – whether private, professional or political.
