German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has spoken out in favor of a ban on headscarves in schools and other official places. In an interview aired on German public television on Monday, Schröder said that it is tolerable for a woman to wear a headscarf in society, but that anyone who works in public service has to abide by a different dress code. The Chancellor said he supported the German states that have passed laws banning teachers from wearing headscarves in schools.
