As the first woman to lead the public prosecutor’s office of Guatemala, Claudia Paz y Paz fought to reform the country’s justice system. For 36 years, Guatemala was ravaged by a civil war that took the lives of countless civilians. Among them were 200,000 Mayans who were systematically murdered. Claudia Paz y Paz saw to the arrest of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt on charges of genocide. It was the first time a former head of state was found guilty of genocide before a national court. The documentary tells the incredible story of a courageous woman who wanted change in Guatemala and was prepared to undergo great personal sacrifice to achieve it. Political differences with the parties that governed Guatemala led to Paz y Paz being removed from office. Today she lives in foreign exile.
