The German military is overstretched and underfunded, according to the armed forces' parliamentary commissioner. German troops are engaged in anti-jihadi missions from Syria and Afghanistan to Mali, while also helping refugees at home.
The helicopter crash in Mali has been attributed to insufficient testing and flight training by a military pilots' lobby group. But the Bundeswehr says it doesn't deploy inexperienced crews to the UN mission.
Germany's defense forces are stretched to the limit, military ombudsman Hans-Peter Bartels told lawmakers, calling for an urgent change in policy. The army currently has fewer personnel than at any time in its history.
Most of the offenses under investigation relate to propaganda and racist commentary on the internet. Germany has increased resources for military intelligence to conduct investigations into suspected extremists.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that Germany and other European nations should increase their defense budget. He said the increase was not about pacifying Donald Trump, but a matter of geography.
