Bundesliga Matchday 3 in Pictures
Wolfsburg show they're no one-man team, the two new kids rack up more surprise points and struggling Stuttgart look as though they're in for another long season. All this and more in our pictorial look at matchday 3.
Modeste seals Cologne comeback
Cologne brought in Anthony Modeste in the summer to spice up their bland attack, and thus far it's been true love between the French forward and the Billy Goats. On Saturday, Modeste completed a 2-1 comeback win against Hamburg on a disputed penalty. The Frenchman has two goals and four assists in his first three games.
No de Bruyne? No problem!
The build-up to Wolfsburg's Friday night match against Schalke was all about midfield ace Kevin De Bruyne's departure to Manchester City. But the Wolves weren't at all distracted by the white noise surrounding the Belgian and racked a more-than-convincing 3-0 win over the Royal Blues. Respect.
Stuttgart drubbed at home to Frankfurt
At home versus Frankfurt, Stuttgart had 53 percent of possession and 15 shots on goal to their opponents' six. But the result was still a 4-1 drubbing for the southern Germans. That was down partly to a sending-off and a penalty. Stuttgart are now 0 for 3 this season, and their fans' patience is starting to wear thin.
Augsburg fall at home to Ingolstadt
Augsburg were last season's pleasant surprise finishing fifth and qualifying for European competition for the first time ever. This season they're threatening to become an unpleasant one. In three games, against manageable opposition, the Acorn Boys have scored only once and earned but a lone point. On Saturday, they lost 1-0 to new kids Ingolstadt.
Mainz hammer Hannover
Mainz seem to have found a replacement for striker Shinji Okazaki, who departed for English side Leicester City this summer. He's fellow Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto. Against an insipid Hannover, Muto was the man of the match, scoring a first-half brace. The end result: a 3-0 walk in the park for Mainz.
Darmstadt draw again against Hoffenheim
Most Bundesliga observers gave tiny Darmstadt little chance of avoiding relegation this season, but give them credit: they've been impossible to beat thus far. The Lillies have earned three draws in the first three matches. On Saturday, they stymied stagnating Hoffenheim, and the match ended goalless.
Hilbert hands Bayern win
It was a tough day at the office for Bayer Leverkusen right-back Roberto Hilbert. Whilst marking Douglas Costa - the liveliest Player in the Bundesliga this season - he gave away two penalties against Bayern Munich. A Thomas Müller brace and Arjen Robben spot-kick earned Bayern a convincing 3-0 win.
No stopping Dortmund on Sunday
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's nickname is Spiderman, but he didn't need to use any webs when executing this acrobatic maneuver. The Dortmund striker had every reason to celebrate. His goal proved to be the game-winner, as Dortmund ran out 3-1 winners against Hertha Berlin. The win also took Aubameyang and Co. back to the top of the table.
What to do about Gladbach?
After going 18 games unbeaten in all competitions to start last season, Borussia Mönchengladbach have begun this one with three Bundesliga losses - the worst start in club history. Credit to Werder, though, who deserved their 2-1. Aron Johannsson converted a spot kick and Jannik Vestergaard headed in a corner on either side of Lars Stindl's first Gladbach goal.
