Bayern beat Hamburg

Alex ChafferAugust 14, 2015

New season, same story for Bayern Munich - at least when they face Hamburg. In the opening match of the 2015-16 season, the Bavarians once again used the Northern Germans as punching bags, thrashing them five-nil.

Bayern Munich 5-0 Hamburg
(Benatia 27', Lewandowski 53‘, Müller 69‘, 73‘, Costa 87')

Hamburg hung tough for almost half an hour but Bayern Munich were too good in the end for Hamburg at the Allianz Arena, cruising to a 5-0 win in front of their home fans. Mehdi Banatia, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller (2x) and Douglas Costa got on the score sheet.

New arrivals Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal got the nos for Bayern Munich, whilst Hamburg welcomed four debutants to its starting eleven, including defender Emir Spahic, who was run out of Leverkusen for punching a stadium attendant.

Bayern Munich had most of the possession throughout the first half whereas Hamburg stat back and hoped to force the reigning champions into making mistakes. And Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer was indeed forced to make the first save of the new season, as Lewis Holtby sent a volley straight at him from the edge of the box. But that turned out to be HSV's only chance of the opening half, as Bayern seized the game by the horns.

Arjen Robben – making his first Bundesliga start since suffering injury against Borussia Mönchengladbach in March – and Robert Lewandowski came close early with headers. But defender Benatia was the unlikely scorer of the first goal of 2015-16, rising unmarked to nod a Xabi Alonso free-kick past Rene Adler just before the half-hour mark.

Pep Guardiola's side could have easily had two before the break, with Müller shooting wide and Jerome Boateng forcing an awkward save from Adler. Sven Schipplock - the lone frontman for the away side - looked isolated for much of the half. Bayern's only trouble of the first 45 minutes was bookings for Alonso and Boateng.

All too easy in Munich

After the restart, there was a faint glimmer of hope of Hamburg getting back into the game when Dennis Diekmeier strolled forward before lacing his shot wide of the goal. But that was all that would come from Hamburg in the second half. Bayern's grip on the game became a stranglehold.

In minute 53 Lewandowski opened his account for the season, slotting home after an attempted headed clearance from Matthias Ostrzolek fell straight to him. It was the Polish forward's 92nd Bundesliga goal.

Then Costa showed just why he's had so many people talking since his arrival in Germany. After chasing down a ball in-play on the right side that few Bundesliga players would have caught, the Brazilian curled it into the box for Müller to slot home.

Four minutes later, Müller had his brace after Lewandowski, brushed off his marker and sliced the defense open with a through ball. Müller rounded a despairing Adler and smiled for the cameras.

The final goal was down to the man of the match. Three minutes from time Costa alertly pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the Hamburg box. After a touch to open space and a look up were all the Brazilian needed to beat Adler into the far bottom corner. Costa's strike was 36th goal Hamburg have conceded in six games against Bayern Munich.

The beat down meant that Bayern sat top of the Bundesliga and Hamburg bottom, as the other 16 teams waited to open their seasons over the weekend.
