Islamic State is claiming responsibility for two explosions in Beirut suburbs. The area is a stronghold of Hezbollah. Lebanon’s militant group supporting the Assad regime in Syria remains undaunted.
According to Israel's military, it struck the Syrian anti-aircraft battery after an Israeli aircraft was targeted over Lebanon. Israel has carried out dozens of attacks on suspected arms shipments to Hezbollah.
The IS militant group has been cornered into a pocket of territory near the Syrian city center where it once staged beheadings and crucifixions. US-backed forces said the fight for the stronghold is nearly over.
The US-led coalition has carried out airstrikes to stall the evacuation of "Islamic State" fighters from the Lebanon-Syria border. The United States had blasted the Hezbollah-negotiated deal ahead of the move.
Beirut has begun strikes against "Islamic State" positions near its border with Syria. The move is a precarious one, as it places the US-backed army tenuously on the same side as Hezbollah and Bashar al-Assad.
