Schweinsteiger talks Germany

Two matches into the English Premier League season and due to fitness trouble, Bastian Schweinsteiger is yet to play 90 minutes for Manchester United. A couple of substitute appearances have left United fans on the edge of their seats, but will his experience in England mean he loses his grip on the German captaincy?

"I am convinced that through my experience with Manchester United, I can become stronger and more valuable for Germany," Schweinsteiger said in an interview with German newspaper "Bild" on Tuesday.

The midfielder was named captain after the retirement of Philipp Lahm and has stressed that the European Championships next summer in France - should Germany qualify - remain "very important" to him.

"I now have a new, large challenge on my chest. This can have a good effect on me moving forward with the national team," Schweinsteiger said.

Reaching the top in Manchester

The challenge with Manchester United in the Premier League isn't just a personal one for Schweinsteiger. The midfielder wants to bring his new club to the heights that Bayern Munich currently sit at.

"I am convinced that - just like under Louis Van Gaal at Bayern - it's possible, with Manchester United, to usher in a new era," the 31-year old explained. "Just like FC Bayern back then, that was the allure for me."

"I can promise that I will attempt with all my experience to help Manchester United to the international level of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern," Schweinsteiger continued.

However, the task of winning the Premier League, unlike in his final years with Bayern Munich, will be tough with Manchester United. "I can't say I have a three-year contract, now we will be champions three times. The Premier League is very strong."

Why United, why now?

Being reunited with former Bayern Munich coach Louis Van Gaal is an ideal situation, Schweinsteiger explains. However, playing under the Dutchman was not the reason for his move to England.

"When you know how a coach works and how he plays football, it makes a decision to move easier. But I came here primarily because of Manchester United," the World Cup winner explains.

Despite the slow start to his Premier League career, Schweinsteiger feels welcomed in Manchester by his new fans. "The wonderful time I had with Bayern will always remain in my heart, but for me, a new chapter has begun and I can already say that after just a few weeks, I feel very connected to this club and its fans. It gave me goose bumps to walk out at Old Trafford."
