The EU has called an emergency summit with Balkan leaders to talk about the growing migration crisis. Thousands of people are stuck in bottlenecks along borders in the Balkans. To add to the misery, a fire broke out at a makeshift camp in Slovenia.
Many border disputes between former Yugoslavian constituent states remain unresolved, including along the Danube river between Serbia and Croatia. A Czech politician has proclaimed a new independent state there.
US Vice President Mike Pence advised the Western Balkans to look westward for peace and stability, during a regional summit in Montenegro on Wednesday.
All talk, no action? Cooperative economic projects have been the hot topic as a conference between leaders from the EU and Western Balkan countries begins. But EU expansion in the region remains as elusive as ever.
Slovenia has emerged as the winner in a long-standing maritime border dispute with Croatia in a ruling from The Hague. However, Croatia has said it will not be taking any notice.
