A hotel in Vienna has redefined hospitality: the Magdas Hotel is run mainly by refugees who have been given asylum in Austria. They would hardly have a chance of getting work otherwise on the Austrian labor market.
Austria's far-right FPÖ is still adjusting to its new role in government, moderating its language but not its positions. The party's anti-immigrant stance still seems to resonate with many people in the country.
The bill would allow authorities to seize refugees' cash and phones, as well as speed up deportations. The government said the harsher measures were designed to fight illegal migration and asylum abuse.
A controversial theater piece about two refugees, one from Syria and one "from Africa," has been canceled hours before its public premiere. But the government-commissioned play has been seen by thousands of children.
The figures on asylum-seekers in the EU for 2017 are in. More than half a million people were granted protection status, with Germany responsible for around 60 percent of positive decisions.
