Austria qualify for Euros
September 8, 2015For the first time ever, Austria have qualified for the UEFA European Championships after a 2-0 win over Sweden on Tuesday night. Elswhere, Russia, England and Belarus picked up wins.
It was always going to be a tense night for Austria, as they travelled to Solna, to face Sweden, needing a draw or a win to confirm their place and next year's European Championships in France. The tension was lifted insisde 10 minutes.
After Kim Källstrom brought down Werder Bremen's Zlatko Junuzovic - one of four Bundesliga players in Austria's starting line-up - David Alaba stepped up, cooly chipping down the middle of the goal for the lead. Before half-time, another Bundesliga player got on the score-sheet, as Stuttgart's Martin Harnik headed home at the back-post.
Goals from Marco Janko and a second from Martin Harnik clinched a 4-1 victory, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also on the score-sheet in the second-half. Elswhere, in Group G, Russia thrashed Liechtenstein 7-0 and Montenegro overcome Moldova 2-0.
England, having already booked its place at the European Championships, faced Switzerland at Wembley. The Three Lions won 2-0 after a Harry Kane strike and a Wayne Rooney penalty, making him England's highest all-time goalscorer with 50 goals. Elsewhere Lithuania snatched a late 2-1 win over San Marino - in which San Marino scored its first away goal in fourteen years - and Slovenia beat Estonia 1-0.
In Group C, Spain beat Macedonia after what appeared to be a cross from Manchester United's Juan Mata avaded Tome Pacovski in the Macedonia goal. In the other fixtures, Slovakia drew 0-0 with Ukraine whilst Belarus beat Luxemborg 2-0.
