Walsh was found dead at his home in Somerton Park after an alleged domestic dispute, with police being called just after 2 a.m. local time on Friday (1630 UTC). His 26-year-old son was taken into custody and later charged with murder

Police made a statement confirming the news via Twitter.

Walsh was said to have died at the scene, despite the attempts of officers and paremedics to revive him. His wife was reported to be in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said there had been an argument involving Walsh's son. "As a result of that, both Mr. Walsh and his wife received the wounds and the wounds ultimately caused Mr. Walsh's death," said a spokesman.

Walsh was a former Australian rules footballer himself, having played for Collingwood, Richmond and the Brisbane Bears in the Victoria Football League between 1983 and 1990. He was appointed senior coach at Adelaide Football Club in October 2014, after the sacking of his predecessor, Brenton Sanderson.

In an April interview, Walsh admitted that his career had affected his family life, saying that he was trying to "reconnect" with his son.
