It's been a not-so-merry Christmas for residents of the German city of Augsburg. Instead of relaxing at home, more than 50,000 of them had to be evacuated while a bomb disposal team defused a huge World War II bomb.
Two 250-kilogram World War II bombs have been diffused in central Potsdam and in the outskirts of Berlin. Both areas had been evacuated as authorities diffused the bombs.
Police in Berlin have said that two bags of bullets found near a Christmas market in western Berlin had no link to terrorist activities. The munitions were uncovered in an underground car park.
In one of the biggest evacuations in Germany since World War II, 70,000 residents of the city of Frankfurt are to move out of their homes while a bomb is defused. It was found at a construction site in the city center.
Potsdam's Christmas market was hurriedly cleared as the bomb squad disabled a suspicious package nearby. Police are trying to determine whether the object was a real explosive device or a dummy.
