Gadhafi reportedly urged Italian women to convert to Islam
The mayor of an island that was once a symbol for refugee compassion has warned it is descending into anarchy. His political opponents accuse him of stoking up fear and overstating the problem.
More than 600,000 people from Africa, Asia and the Middle East have arrived in Italy over the last three years. The eviction of 800 migrants from a former office block in central Rome left some sleeping on the streets.
There's been a sharp fall in the number of migrants arriving in Italy. In the first half of August, there were 73% fewer arrivals than the same period last year. Experts say there could be a number of reasons for the drop. Flavio Di Giacomo is spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration, or IOM in Rome. He says one of the reasons is the situation in Libya.
