Nigerian forces have repeatedly failed to thwart Boko Haram's attacks on schools. More than 100 girls were taken in a recent attack. Fear could prevent others from attending school, Adrian Kriesch reports from Dapchi.
The government had banned the demonstration and cut off all cell phone and internet access to hamper the rally against President Joseph Kabila who is clinging to power. Church groups had called for the rally.
Five people were killed and many more injured in protests that broke out in a Rwandan refugee camp earlier this week. The refugees were protesting a cut in food rations brought about by a funding gap.
