Belgian beer has a rich history. Every city is attached to a particular variety of beer. Now, UNESCO has added it to the World Heritage List.
Boasting a rich history and endless diversity, Belgian beer has been added to UNESCO's "intangible heritage" list. The UN body praised the country for fostering a unified identity despite being linguistically divided.
Belgian beer culture was added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November 2016. It is now being celebrated at the 10th Beer Festival in Bruges.
The international contest "The Brussels Beer Challenge" featured 1,250 beers from 36 countries and 80 judges to sample the tipples on offer. The results:
