The German army has sent 100 people to Mali to help train the country's army to fight insurgents in the north. Our reporter follows the trainers - and trainees - as they prepare for their mission.
Family members and dignitaries including Germany's defense minister paid tribute to soldiers who died in a helicopter crash. They'd been conducting surveillance as part of the UN peacekeeping mission in war-torn Mali.
The bodies of two German soldiers whose helicopter had crashed in Mali have been repatriated. The two deaths marked the first fatalities in Germany's mission in west Africa.
German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is in Mali to visit the troops and meet with her French counterpart. It comes after two German pilots died in a crash.
