A female perspective on Egypt

Salma Hegab is a 22-year-old blogger from Egypt. Two years ago she was an active participant in protests at Tahrir square. Now, due to a rise in rapes and general lawlessness, her family is demanding that she doesn't join the protests. We spoke to her from her home in Cairo.

Democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi has been ousted by the army following days of protests in Cairo and other Egyptian cities. General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has now proclaimed a new head of state for Egypt, and requested new elections. But, people are still involved in clashes and violent protests - meaning the situation on the street remains precarious.
